My Process

My process starts with screen printing on cotton fabric, using a technique where the screen “breaks down” with each pull of the squeegee.

Each screen has a limited number of prints until the screen is exhausted, and the effect is a series of screen prints that are both intentional and surprising. The printed fabric is then cut up and collaged back together onto wooden cradle boards, and then I paint the entire surface with wax—encaustic painting. I love the smell of bees wax and the luminosity that wax gives my work. I am able to create depth with layers of printing, painting and wax. The final layer is a series of surface techniques including carving into the wax, and adding oil paint, pastel, drawing and other media to finish. Each piece is completely unique.

I love, love, love the process!

It’s very physical, unpredictable and spontaneous. I never know how each piece will turn out, ever! That is the joy of this process… you imagine the work will turn out one way, but you may end up something completely different. Although the printmaking and encaustic processes are rather technical, time consuming and complicated, I find the work meditative and engrossing.

I hope my work draws the viewer in. I hope it offers a surprising and uplifting experience.
